Understanding the JEE Main eligibility criteria before applying is not optional. It is the most critical step in the entire process. Candidates who do not meet the conditions set by NTA face cancellation of candidature at any stage of the process, including after completing the examination and even after seat allotment through JoSAA counselling. There is no appeal process once candidature is cancelled for ineligibility.
This page covers every aspect of the JEE Main 2027 eligibility criteria in complete detail: nationality, age limit, educational qualification, compulsory subjects, year of passing Class 12, number of attempts, dropper eligibility, eligibility for NRIs and foreign nationals, and the separate criteria for admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through JoSAA counselling.
The eligibility criteria for JEE Main 2027 are expected to remain unchanged from those prescribed in JEE Main 2025 and 2026. NTA has not announced any revision as of May 2026. All information on this page is based on official NTA data from the JEE Main 2026 Information Brochure.
Official Source: The JEE Main 2027 eligibility criteria will be officially published by NTA in the Information Brochure at jeemain.nta.nic.in, expected in October 2026. Candidates must verify their eligibility from the official brochure before applying.
Visit the JEE Main Page for the complete exam overview, dates, syllabus, cutoff, and all sub-pages.

The following categories of candidates are eligible to apply for JEE Main 2027:
Candidates in the NRI, PIO, OCI, and foreign national categories should note that they must select the appropriate fee category during registration and choose from the designated international exam centres. Different application fee amounts apply for candidates appearing from outside India.
The National Testing Agency does not prescribe any minimum or maximum age limit for appearing in JEE Main. Any candidate who meets the educational qualification requirements can apply irrespective of their age.
However, candidates must note that individual participating institutions, particularly NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, may have their own age-based admission criteria. These are separate from NTA's eligibility criteria for the examination itself and are specified in the individual institute's admission rules. Candidates should verify age requirements with their target institutions before applying.
Candidates must have passed the Class 12 examination (10+2 or equivalent) from a recognised board. The qualifying examination must be from one of the following:
This is one of the most critical eligibility conditions and one that many candidates overlook.
| Year of Passing Class 12 JEE Main 2027 Eligibility | |
| 2025 | Eligible |
| 2026 | Eligible |
| 2027 (Appearing in the exam) | Eligible |
| 2024 | Not Eligible |
| 2023 or Earlier | Not Eligible |
Candidates who passed Class 12 in 2024 or any year before that cannot appear in JEE Main 2027. This is a hard cutoff with no exceptions. The three-year window means only candidates from the three most recent qualifying years are eligible at any given time.
The subjects studied in Class 12 determine which JEE Main paper a candidate is eligible to appear for.
Candidates must have studied and passed Physics and Mathematics in Class 12, along with any one of the following as the third subject:
Important: Chemistry is not individually mandatory for Paper 1. Candidates who studied Physics, Mathematics, and Biology (PCB stream) are eligible to appear for the B.Tech paper. However, since JEE Main Paper 1 tests Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, candidates without Chemistry background must prepare Chemistry independently.
All three subjects, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, are compulsory in Class 12 for B.Arch eligibility.
Additionally, the Council of Architecture (CoA) requires a separate 50 percent minimum in Mathematics at the qualifying examination for admission to B.Arch programmes. Candidates must verify this requirement with the individual institution.
Mathematics must be a compulsory subject in Class 12. Other subject combinations are acceptable as long as Mathematics is included.
The attempt limit is one of the most discussed aspects of JEE Main eligibility. Understanding it correctly helps candidates plan their preparation timeline.
| Attempt Parameter Rule | |
| Maximum consecutive years of eligibility | 3 years from the year of first passing Class 12 |
| Sessions per year | 2 (Session 1 in January and Session 2 in April) |
| Maximum total lifetime attempts | 6 (2 sessions per year multiplied by 3 years) |
| Does skipping a session count as an attempt? | No. Only sessions in which the candidate appears are counted as attempts |
| Does absent/cancelled candidature count? | Generally no, but candidates must verify from the official brochure |
Example 1: A candidate who passed Class 12 in 2025 and is applying for JEE Main 2027 for the first time. This is the third year of their eligibility window (2025, 2026, 2027). They can appear in both sessions (January 2027 and April 2027) but cannot apply for JEE Main 2028.
Example 2: A candidate who passed Class 12 in 2026 and is applying for JEE Main 2027 for the first time. This is the second year of their eligibility window. They still have JEE Main 2028 available as their final year.
Example 3: A candidate who passed Class 12 in 2024 is NOT eligible for JEE Main 2027. Their three-year window covered 2024, 2025, and 2026 only.
Candidates who have taken a drop year after Class 12 to prepare for JEE Main are commonly referred to as droppers. Their eligibility follows the same rules as any other candidate.
| Passed Class 12 In Eligible for JEE Main 2027? Remaining Attempts After 2027 | ||
| 2025 | Yes | No more (2027 is the final year) |
| 2026 | Yes | 1 more year (JEE Main 2028) |
| 2024 | No | Eligibility window closed |
Can a dropper appear in JEE Main? Yes. There is no restriction on appearing in JEE Main after taking a gap year, provided the candidate is within the three-year eligibility window from their Class 12 pass year.
Does gap year affect NIT/IIT admission? Taking a drop year does not affect eligibility for JEE Main or JEE Advanced. Some institutions may ask about gap years during document verification, but it does not disqualify a candidate from appearing in the examination or from seat allotment.
Can a dropper from 2024 appear in JEE Main 2027? No. A candidate who passed Class 12 in 2024 has exhausted their three-year eligibility window (2024, 2025, 2026) and is not eligible for JEE Main 2027.
Candidates of Indian origin living outside India can apply for JEE Main under specific conditions.
| Category Eligibility Fee Structure | ||
| NRI (Non-Resident Indian) | Eligible; must choose international exam centre if applicable | Separate (higher) fee |
| PIO (Person of Indian Origin) | Eligible with PIO card | Separate (higher) fee |
| OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) | Eligible with OCI card | Separate (higher) fee |
| Foreign National | Check specific conditions in Information Brochure | Separate fee |
NRI and OCI candidates who wish to appear from India can select an exam centre in India during registration. Their scores are valid for JoSAA counselling and admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, subject to seat availability under the DASA or regular quota depending on the institution.
Qualifying JEE Main by crossing the NTA cutoff percentile makes a candidate eligible for JEE Advanced and for JoSAA counselling. However, actual seat allotment in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through JoSAA counselling requires meeting additional criteria.
This rule applies only to admission, not to appearing in JEE Main.
| Category Minimum Class 12 Percentage Required for NIT/IIIT/GFTI Admission | |
| General (UR) | 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 |
| General - EWS | 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 |
| OBC-NCL | 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 |
| SC | 65% aggregate marks in Class 12 |
| ST | 65% aggregate marks in Class 12 |
Alternatively, candidates who are in the top 20th percentile of their respective boards in the Class 12 examination are eligible for admission regardless of whether they have 75 percent or not.
The State Code of Eligibility (SCE) is a critical factor in JEE Main registration. It determines the candidate's Home State status for NIT seat allocation.
Choosing the wrong State Code of Eligibility during registration is a common and costly mistake. It cannot be corrected after the application correction window closes.
| Category Seat Reservation Percentage | |
| Other Backward Classes - Non Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL) | 27% |
| Scheduled Caste (SC) | 15% |
| Scheduled Tribe (ST) | 7.5% |
| Economically Weaker Section (EWS) | 10% |
| Persons with Disability (PwD) | 5% (horizontal, across all categories) |
| General (UR) | Remaining seats |
PwD reservation is horizontal, meaning 5 percent of seats in each category (General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS) are reserved for PwD candidates within that category.
Qualifying JEE Main is the first step toward JEE Advanced and IIT admission. The eligibility conditions for JEE Advanced are:
| Condition Requirement | |
| JEE Main Qualification | Must have cleared the JEE Main cutoff and be among the top 2,50,000 qualifiers |
| Class 12 Year | Must have passed Class 12 in 2026 or appearing in 2027 (for JEE Advanced 2027) |
| JEE Advanced Attempts | Maximum 2 attempts in two consecutive years |
| Earlier JEE Advanced Appearance | Candidates who appeared in JEE Advanced 2026 can appear in 2027 (second attempt); those who appeared in 2025 are not eligible for 2027 |
| Admission at IIT | Candidates who have previously taken admission at an IIT (and not cancelled) are generally not eligible |
| Paper Programme Compulsory Subjects in Class 12 | ||
| Paper 1 | B.E. / B.Tech | Physics + Mathematics + (Chemistry or Biology or Biotechnology or Technical Vocational) |
| Paper 2A | B.Arch | Physics + Chemistry + Mathematics (all three compulsory) |
| Paper 2B | B.Planning | Mathematics (compulsory); other subjects flexible |
| Papers 1 and 2 Together | B.Tech + B.Arch or B.Planning | As per requirements of both papers |
A candidate can appear in Paper 1, Paper 2A, Paper 2B, or any combination of these in the same session by paying the applicable combined fee.
Mistake 1: Confusing the 75 percent rule with appearing in JEE Main The 75 percent Class 12 criterion applies only to admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through JoSAA. Any candidate can appear in the JEE Main examination regardless of their Class 12 percentage.
Mistake 2: Selecting the wrong State Code of Eligibility The Home State is the state where you completed Class 12, not where you were born or currently live. Selecting the wrong state code cannot be corrected after the application correction window.
Mistake 3: Counting the wrong year for the attempt limit The three-year window begins from the year you first passed Class 12, not from the year you first appeared in JEE Main. A candidate who passed in 2025 has eligibility through 2027 only.
Mistake 4: Not verifying compulsory subjects for B.Arch For Paper 2A (B.Arch), all three subjects, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, must have been studied and passed in Class 12. Candidates with Biology instead of Chemistry are not eligible for B.Arch.
Mistake 5: Assuming clearing JEE Main guarantees NIT admission Clearing the NTA qualifying cutoff only confirms eligibility for JEE Advanced and JoSAA counselling. Securing a seat at a specific NIT, IIIT, or GFTI depends on your All India Rank and the closing rank for that branch and category.
At the time of document verification (during JoSAA counselling or direct admission), candidates must produce the following:
| Document Purpose | |
| Class 10 Marksheet and Certificate | For date of birth verification |
| Class 12 Marksheet and Certificate (or Provisional Certificate) | For educational qualification and year of passing |
| Category Certificate (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS) | For reservation benefits; must be issued by competent authority |
| PwD Certificate | For Persons with Disability reservation; must specify percentage of disability |
| OCI/PIO Card | For NRI/OCI/PIO candidates |
| Transfer Certificate from School | Issued by the last school attended |
Important for OBC-NCL and EWS candidates: Category certificates must be issued on or after April 1 of the year preceding the admission year (for JEE Main 2027, the certificate should be dated on or after April 1, 2026). Earlier-dated certificates may not be accepted during counselling.
Q1. Is there any age limit for JEE Main 2027? No. NTA does not prescribe any minimum or maximum age limit for appearing in JEE Main. However, certain participating institutes may have their own age criteria for admission.
Q2. Can PCB students (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) appear in JEE Main 2027? Yes. Candidates with PCB stream can appear for Paper 1 (B.Tech) since Mathematics is compulsory but Chemistry and Biology can be interchangeable as the third subject. However, they must prepare Mathematics independently since their stream did not include it.
Q3. Can I appear in JEE Main 2027 if I passed Class 12 in 2024? No. The three-year eligibility window for a candidate who passed in 2024 covers JEE Main 2024, 2025, and 2026 only. JEE Main 2027 is not within this window.
Q4. What is the maximum number of times I can appear in JEE Main? You can appear in JEE Main for a maximum of 6 times: 2 sessions per year across 3 consecutive years from your Class 12 pass year.
Q5. I took a drop year after failing Class 12 in 2025. Am I eligible for JEE Main 2027? Only if you passed Class 12 (even on a later attempt) in 2025 or 2026. If you finally passed in 2026, you are eligible for JEE Main 2027 as it falls within your three-year window (2026, 2027, 2028).
Q6. Is NIOS considered a valid qualifying examination for JEE Main? Yes. The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is a recognised board, and candidates who have cleared Class 12 from NIOS with the required subjects are eligible for JEE Main.
Q7. I completed Class 12 abroad. Can I apply for JEE Main 2027? Yes, provided you obtain an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) confirming that your qualification is equivalent to the Indian Class 12 standard.
