All the months of preparation, the textbooks, the mock tests, the chapter-wise PYQs, and the error analyses culminate in a single 3-hour window on exam day. A candidate who walks into the examination centre fully prepared for the academic content but unprepared for the logistics risks losing precious time and composure before the first question appears on screen.
The most preventable errors on JEE Main exam day include arriving late and being denied entry, forgetting a required document, carrying a prohibited item that triggers biometric issues, not understanding the CBT interface because of insufficient practice, and panicking over last-minute technical glitches at the centre.
This page covers every aspect of JEE Main 2027 exam day preparation: the complete documents list, reporting times, shift timings, dress code and appearance guidelines, facial biometric verification process (introduced in 2026), prohibited items, CBT interface reminders, time management during the exam, and a question-by-question strategy for the 3-hour window.
All guidance on this page is based on NTA's official instructions from JEE Main 2025 and 2026. The 2027 process is expected to be identical unless otherwise announced in the Information Brochure.
Visit the JEE Main complete guide for dates, eligibility, application process, syllabus, cutoff, and all related resources.
JEE Main is conducted in two shifts on each exam day.
| Shift Exam Timing Gate Closing Time Reporting Deadline Entry Strictly Prohibited After | ||||
| Shift 1 (Morning) | 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM | 8:30 AM | 7:30 AM to 8:00 AM | 8:30 AM |
| Shift 2 (Afternoon) | 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM | 2:30 PM | 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM | 2:30 PM |
The gate closing time is absolute. Candidates who arrive after the gate closes are denied entry without exception, regardless of reason, distance travelled, or circumstances. NTA does not provide any compensatory arrangement for late arrivals.
Candidates must plan to arrive at the centre at least 60 to 90 minutes before exam start time to allow for queue management, document verification, biometric registration, and seating.
Every document in this list is mandatory unless otherwise noted. Missing any mandatory document results in denial of entry.

Before printing the admit card, verify the following on screen:
If any detail is incorrect on the admit card, contact NTA at jeemain@nta.ac.in immediately. Do not wait until exam day to report discrepancies.
NTA introduced facial biometric authentication at all JEE Main examination centres from JEE Main 2026 onwards. This is expected to continue in 2027.
At the examination centre, before being allowed into the hall, every candidate goes through:
If the facial biometric does not match (due to lighting conditions, appearance changes, or technical glitches), the invigilator has a manual override process where additional identity verification is done. Candidates should not panic if the first scan fails; this is common with automated systems.
The examination centre staff will confiscate any prohibited item found in your possession. In severe cases, carrying a prohibited electronic device may be treated as malpractice and result in cancellation of candidature.
| Category Prohibited Items | |
| Electronic devices | Mobile phones, smartphones, smartwatches, Bluetooth devices, earphones, wireless earbuds, tablets, laptops, calculators (including scientific calculators), any programmable device |
| Communication devices | Walkie-talkie, pager, wireless communication devices of any kind |

Candidates do not need to bring any stationery or rough material. The following is provided at every NTA examination centre:
Understanding the sequence of events from arrival to question 1 appearing on screen eliminates exam-day surprises.
Step 1: Arrival at centre (recommended: 75 to 90 minutes before shift) Locate the centre entry point. Queue management begins approximately 90 minutes before the shift. Do not panic if the queue is long.
Step 2: Outer gate verification Show your admit card at the outer gate to confirm you are at the correct centre. Gate staff may direct you to specific entry queues based on roll number or hall number.
Step 3: Document verification (first checkpoint) An invigilator checks your admit card, original photo ID, and photographs. The admit card will be stamped or signed. Do not let the invigilator retain your original photo ID.
Step 4: Prohibited item deposit All mobile phones, watches, and other prohibited items must be deposited outside the hall in designated storage (if available) or left in your vehicle. NTA examination centres in 2026 did not provide locker facilities uniformly; plan to leave all prohibited items with a companion outside or in your vehicle.
Step 5: Biometric verification (second checkpoint) Facial biometric scan and thumb impression are captured at the hall entry point. This takes 30 to 60 seconds per candidate. During busy entry periods, allow 15 to 20 minutes for this queue.
Step 6: Seating and system login Enter the hall, find your assigned seat (seat number is on the admit card or posted on the door), and sit down. The invigilator will provide the login credentials (application number and date of birth or system-specific password) for the CBT interface. Log in and verify the paper details on screen before the exam begins.
Step 7: Rough sheet distribution Rough sheets are distributed before the exam clock starts. Sign them and keep them at your desk.
Step 8: Exam instructions phase A 15-minute instruction period appears on screen before the 3-hour timer begins. Read all instructions on screen and familiarise yourself with the interface during this time.
Step 9: Exam begins The 3-hour timer starts. Question 1 appears. The exam is underway.
Effective time allocation inside the exam hall is the single most impactful exam-day skill.
Most JEE Main toppers and coaching experts recommend the following sequence:
Chemistry first (40 to 50 minutes): Chemistry is typically the most scoring and fastest-to-attempt subject. Starting with Chemistry builds confidence and banks easy marks early. Complete Section A (MCQs) first, then Section B (NVQs).
Physics second (55 to 65 minutes): Physics is moderate in difficulty. Attempt conceptual MCQs first, then calculation-based MCQs, then NVQs. If a Physics NVQ requires more than 4 minutes, mark it for review and return.
Mathematics last (65 to 80 minutes): Mathematics is consistently the most time-consuming section. Attempt MCQs first in order of confidence. Do not spend more than 7 minutes on any single Mathematics question during the first pass. Return to skipped questions with remaining time.
Final 10 minutes: Review all marked questions across all subjects. Do not change answers you were confident about. Only change answers where you have strong reason to believe your first response was wrong.
During the first pass through each subject, attempt every question you can answer in under 2.5 minutes. Mark for review any question that requires more time. In the second pass, return to marked questions with the remaining subject time. This ensures you never miss an easy question at the end of a subject because you spent 10 minutes on a hard one at the beginning.
NTA does not prescribe a formal dress code but specifies restrictions for security reasons.
| Item Guideline | |
| Full-sleeve garments | Candidates wearing full-sleeve clothing may be requested to roll up sleeves for wrist checks |
| Footwear | Open sandals or slippers are recommended over closed shoes to simplify security checks |
| Accessories | Minimal jewellery; avoid metal accessories that trigger detection during security checks |
| Headgear | Not permitted except for religious reasons; face must be clearly visible and captured by biometric camera |
| Hair accessories | Large hair accessories with metallic components should be avoided |
Candidates with Persons with Disability (PwD) status who have applied for scribe assistance or compensatory time must carry the following additional documentation.
| Document Specification | |
| UDID Card | Updated, valid Unique Disability ID |
| Disability Certificate | Specifying percentage and type of disability |
| Scribe Arrangement Letter | If scribe was arranged through NTA portal |
PwD candidates with 40 percent or more disability are entitled to a 4-hour exam duration (1 additional hour). Candidates who arranged a scribe must ensure the scribe is present at the centre with their own valid photo ID.
Technical issues during a computer-based test, though rare, do occur. Knowing the correct response prevents loss of exam time.
| Problem Correct Action | |
| Screen freezes mid-exam | Raise your hand immediately; do not touch the keyboard repeatedly |
| Internet connectivity error | Raise your hand; the system uses offline caching so most answers are already saved |
| Power outage at centre | Remain seated; NTA centres have generator backup; exam will resume |
| Answer selection not registering | Try clicking the option again; if persistent, raise hand for invigilator assistance |
| System logs out during exam | Raise hand; invigilator can restore session with remaining time intact in most cases |
| Wrong question paper shown | Raise hand immediately before attempting any questions |
Do not attempt to fix technical problems yourself. Touching the system without invigilator permission may be flagged as malpractice.
The night before your JEE Main 2027 exam should not be spent studying new material. Use it entirely for logistics preparation.
| Task Details | |
| Print admit card | Take 2 to 3 printouts on A4 paper |
| Keep photo ID ready | Place original Aadhaar or passport in a safe pouch |
| Prepare photographs | Keep 2 passport-size photographs ready to paste |
| Check centre address | Open Google Maps and confirm the route and estimated travel time |
| Plan departure time | Add 30 minutes buffer to travel time; plan to arrive 75 to 90 minutes before shift |
| Pack transparent water bottle | No other food items allowed inside the hall |
| Keep medications ready | If prescribed, pack with prescription in a transparent pouch |
| Sleep on time | Aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep; a sleep-deprived brain underperforms on exam day |
| No new topics | Do not study new chapters or complex problems the night before |
| Quick formula revision only | If studying at all, limit to 30 to 45 minutes of formula sheet or short notes review |
Q1. Can I bring my own pen and pencil to JEE Main? No. Personal stationery is not permitted inside the examination hall. Rough sheets and a pen are provided by NTA at the centre.
Q2. What happens if I arrive after the gate closes? You will not be allowed to enter. There are no exceptions to the gate closing time. You will lose that shift attempt entirely.
Q3. Can I wear a digital watch to JEE Main? No. Smartwatches, fitness bands with displays, and all digital watches are prohibited. Analog watches without any network connectivity are generally allowed but may be subject to security inspection. To avoid any issue, leave all watches at home or with your companion.
Q4. Will I get a break during the 3-hour exam? No. JEE Main does not provide a scheduled break during the 3-hour paper. Candidates may request a restroom break but this time is deducted from the exam timer. Plan accordingly.
Q5. Is a virtual calculator provided during the JEE Main CBT? No. NTA has explicitly confirmed that no virtual calculator is provided. All calculations must be done mentally or on the physical rough sheet provided by the invigilator.
Q6. What should I do if my name or photograph on the admit card does not match my ID? Report the discrepancy to NTA before the exam day. On the day itself, carry an additional government ID with your photograph. The invigilator has authority to allow candidates through secondary verification, but there is no guarantee. Contact NTA at jeemain@nta.ac.in as soon as you spot any discrepancy.
Q7. My exam centre is very far from home. Can I request a centre change? Centre changes after the correction window are generally not permitted. NTA assigns centres from your preferred cities listed in the application form. If your assigned centre is in a different city from your preferences, contact NTA through the grievance portal before the admit card is finalised.
