Q1. Who can appear in JEE Main 2027? Candidates who have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) in 2025 or 2026, or who are appearing in 2027, are eligible. Indian Citizens, NRIs, PIOs, and OCIs can apply. There is no age limit. Candidates who passed Class 12 in 2024 or earlier are not eligible for JEE Main 2027.
Q2. Is there an age limit for JEE Main 2027? No. NTA does not prescribe any minimum or maximum age limit for appearing in JEE Main. Individual institutes (NITs, IIITs, GFTIs) may have their own age criteria for admission, which candidates should verify separately.
Q3. Can a Class 12 student appearing in 2027 board exams apply for JEE Main 2027? Yes. Candidates appearing in Class 12 in 2027 are eligible to apply for both Session 1 (January 2027) and Session 2 (April 2027). They do not need to wait for their board result.
Q4. Can a student who passed Class 12 in 2024 appear for JEE Main 2027? No. The three-year eligibility window for a candidate who passed in 2024 covers JEE Main 2024, 2025, and 2026 only. JEE Main 2027 is outside this window and they are not eligible.
Q5. Can PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) students appear for JEE Main Paper 1 (B.Tech)? Yes. For Paper 1 (B.Tech), Physics and Mathematics are compulsory subjects in Class 12, but the third subject can be Chemistry or Biology. PCB students are eligible for Paper 1 but must independently prepare Mathematics for the exam since their stream did not include it.
Q6. Is Mathematics mandatory for all JEE Main papers? For Paper 1 (B.Tech): Mathematics is compulsory in Class 12. For Paper 2A (B.Arch): Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics all three are compulsory. For Paper 2B (B.Planning): Mathematics is compulsory. Chemistry is not individually mandatory for Paper 1.
Q7. How many times can I appear in JEE Main in my lifetime? A candidate can appear in JEE Main for a maximum of 3 consecutive years from the year of passing Class 12, with 2 sessions (January and April) per year. Maximum lifetime attempts: 6.
Q8. Does taking a drop year affect JEE Main eligibility? No. Taking a gap year after Class 12 does not affect eligibility. Eligibility depends on your Class 12 pass year, not on when you first appear in JEE Main.
Q9. Can a candidate who passed Class 12 from a state board outside India appear in JEE Main? Yes, provided they obtain an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) confirming that their qualification is equivalent to the Indian Class 12 standard.
Q10. What is the minimum marks required in Class 12 to appear in JEE Main? There is no minimum percentage required to appear in JEE Main. The 75 percent Class 12 criterion applies only for admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through JoSAA counselling, not for appearing in the examination.
Q11. When does JEE Main 2027 registration open? Based on NTA's pattern (October 31 for JEE Main 2026, October 28 for JEE Main 2025), registration for Session 1 is expected to open in the last week of October 2026. Check the JEE Main Notification page for official updates.
Q12. Where do I register for JEE Main 2027? Exclusively at jeemain.nta.nic.in. Do not use any third-party website or agent for JEE Main registration.
Q13. How do I register for Session 2 if I already registered for Session 1? Candidates who registered for Session 1 can log into jeemain.nta.nic.in using their existing Application Number and Password when Session 2 registration opens (expected February 2027). They only need to pay the Session 2 fee and update city preferences; personal and academic details are carried forward automatically.
Q14. Can I apply only for Session 2 without registering for Session 1? Yes. Registration for each session is independent. If you missed Session 1, you can register fresh for Session 2 when that window opens in February 2027, completing the full registration process from step 1.
Q15. What is the application fee for JEE Main 2027? Based on JEE Main 2026 fee structure: General/UR Male: Rs. 1000; General Female: Rs. 800; OBC-NCL Male: Rs. 900; OBC-NCL Female: Rs. 800; SC/ST/PwD/Transgender: Rs. 500 for all genders. Fee for international centres: approximately Rs. 5000. Exact 2027 fees will be confirmed in the official brochure.
Q16. Can I change my category after submitting the application form? Category can be changed during the application correction window (open for 2 to 3 days after the registration deadline). After the correction window closes, category changes are not permitted. Additional fee may apply if changing from a lower-fee to higher-fee category.
Q17. What is the State Code of Eligibility and why does it matter? The State Code of Eligibility is the state from which you completed Class 12. It determines your Home State status for NIT seat allocation (NITs reserve 50 percent of seats for Home State candidates). It must be the state where your Class 12 board is located, not your domicile state or birth state.
Q18. What documents do I need for JEE Main 2027 registration? Aadhaar Card (for Aadhaar-based verification), passport-size photograph (JPEG, 10 KB to 200 KB), signature (JPEG, 4 KB to 30 KB), left-hand thumb impression, Class 10 marksheet, and category certificate if applicable.
Q19. Is the application fee refundable? No. The JEE Main application fee is completely non-refundable under all circumstances including withdrawal, disqualification, or exam cancellation.
Q20. What happens if I make an error in the application form? Use the application correction window (open 2 to 3 days after the registration deadline) to correct errors. After the window closes, most changes are not possible. Critical fields like Application Number, registered mobile number, and email ID cannot be changed at any time.
Q21. How many questions are in JEE Main Paper 1? 75 questions: 60 MCQs (20 per subject in Section A) and 15 NVQs (5 per subject in Section B). All 75 questions are compulsory.
Q22. Are there optional questions in JEE Main 2027? No. Since JEE Main 2025, all questions in all sections are compulsory. Section B no longer has the "attempt any 5 of 10" format. All 5 NVQs per subject must be attempted or left blank.
Q23. Is there negative marking for numerical value questions (NVQs) in JEE Main? Yes. Since 2025, incorrect NVQ answers carry a penalty of -1 mark, identical to incorrect MCQ answers. This is a critical change from pre-2025 format where NVQs had no negative marking.
Q24. What is the marking scheme for JEE Main 2027? Correct answer: +4 marks. Incorrect answer (MCQ or NVQ): -1 mark. Unattempted question: 0 marks. Marking more than one option in an MCQ: -1 mark (treated as incorrect).
Q25. How long is the JEE Main exam? 3 hours (180 minutes) for all candidates. 4 hours (240 minutes) for PwD candidates with 40 percent or more disability who are eligible for a scribe.
Q26. In which mode is JEE Main conducted? Computer Based Test (CBT) mode for Papers 1, 2A, and 2B. The Drawing section of Paper 2A (B.Arch) is conducted in Pen-and-Paper mode at the centre.
Q27. Can I use a calculator during JEE Main? No. NTA explicitly prohibits calculators and does not provide a virtual calculator. All calculations must be done mentally or on the physical rough sheet provided at the centre.
Q28. Can I switch between subjects during the CBT exam? Yes. The CBT interface allows free navigation between any question across all three subjects at any time during the 3-hour window. You are not locked into one subject.
Q29. What happens if a question is found to be incorrect after the exam? NTA awards +4 marks to all candidates who attempted the question, regardless of their chosen option. If the question is fully cancelled (deleted), +4 marks are awarded to all candidates who saw it.
Q30. What is the JEE Main Paper 1 total marks? 300 marks. Physics: 100 marks, Chemistry: 100 marks, Mathematics: 100 marks.
Q31. Is the JEE Main 2027 syllabus the same as 2026? No changes have been announced by NTA as of May 2026. The 2027 syllabus is expected to follow the revised NTA syllabus introduced in 2024 and carried unchanged through 2025 and 2026.
Q32. Is NCERT enough for JEE Main 2027? For Chemistry (especially Inorganic Chemistry) and basic Physics and Mathematics concept-building, NCERT is essential and non-negotiable. For scoring above 90 to 95 percentile, NCERT must be supplemented with reference books for Physics (HC Verma, DC Pandey) and Mathematics (RD Sharma, SL Loney, IA Maron).
Q33. Which topics were removed from the JEE Main syllabus? In 2024, NTA removed Communication Systems from Physics, Mathematical Reasoning from Mathematics, and Environmental Chemistry as a full chapter from Chemistry. These remain out of scope for 2026 and are expected to remain so for 2027.
Q34. How is the Class 11 and Class 12 weightage distributed in JEE Main? Based on 2024 to 2026 data, approximately 40 percent of questions come from Class 11 and 60 percent from Class 12 in Physics. For Chemistry and Mathematics, the split is roughly equal (45:55 to 50:50).
Q35. What are the most important chapters for JEE Main 2027? Physics: Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Modern Physics, Wave Optics, Rotational Motion. Chemistry: Mole Concept, Coordination Compounds, Chemical Bonding, p-Block Elements, Carbonyl Compounds. Mathematics: Integral Calculus, Coordinate Geometry (Conics), Matrices and Determinants, 3D Geometry and Vectors. For full chapter-wise coverage, visit JEE Main Syllabus.
Q36. When will the JEE Main 2027 admit card be released? The admit card is typically released 3 days before the first exam date of each session. For Session 1 (January 2027), the admit card is expected in the third week of January 2027. For Session 2 (April 2027), it is expected in the first week of April 2027.
Q37. How do I download the JEE Main 2027 admit card? Visit jeemain.nta.nic.in, click on the admit card download link when active, log in with your Application Number and Password or Date of Birth, and download the PDF. Take 2 to 3 printouts.
Q38. Is the admit card sent by post or email? No. NTA does not send physical admit cards by post. The admit card is available only online at jeemain.nta.nic.in. A notification email is sent to the registered email address when the admit card is released, but the email does not contain the admit card itself.
Q39. What information does the JEE Main admit card contain? Candidate name, date of birth, application number, roll number, paper, exam date, shift, examination centre name and address, city, important exam instructions, and the candidate's photograph.
Q40. Can I enter the exam centre without a printed admit card? No. A printed copy of the admit card is mandatory for entry. Showing the admit card on a mobile phone screen is not accepted.
Q41. What is the JEE Main NTA Score? The NTA Score is a percentile, not a percentage of marks. It represents the proportion of candidates in your session and shift who scored equal to or less than your raw score. An NTA Score of 95.00 means you outperformed 95 percent of candidates in your shift.
Q42. When is the JEE Main 2027 result declared? Session 1 result (NTA Score only, no AIR): February 2027. Session 2 result (NTA Score + All India Rank + qualifying cutoff): Last week of April 2027.
Q43. When is the All India Rank (AIR) released? The AIR is released only with the Session 2 result. The Session 1 result does not include the AIR.
Q44. What was the JEE Main 2026 qualifying cutoff for General category? The official qualifying cutoff for General/UR category in JEE Main 2026 (released April 20, 2026) was 93.4123549 percentile. A total of 2,50,182 candidates qualified for JEE Advanced 2026.
Q45. If I appear in both sessions, which score is used for rank? NTA takes the higher NTA Score from either Session 1 or Session 2 as the final score for AIR calculation. There is no average; it is always the best score.
Q46. What is the difference between the qualifying cutoff and the admission cutoff? The qualifying cutoff (released by NTA) is the minimum percentile to be eligible for JEE Advanced and JoSAA counselling. The admission cutoff is the closing rank for a specific branch at a specific institute through JoSAA, which is far more competitive. Qualifying the NTA cutoff does not guarantee admission to any specific institute.
Q47. How is normalisation applied across different JEE Main shifts? NTA uses percentile-based normalisation: each candidate's raw score is converted to a percentile within their specific shift. This percentile is the NTA Score. Since percentiles compare performance within a shift, a harder shift does not disadvantage candidates; those in tougher shifts receive higher percentiles for the same relative performance.
Q48. When should I start preparing for JEE Main 2027? Ideally from Class 11 (May/June 2025 for candidates appearing in JEE Main 2027). The JEE Main syllabus covers both Class 11 and Class 12 in roughly equal measure. Starting from Class 11 gives 18 months of preparation before Session 1 in January 2027.
Q49. How many mock tests should I attempt before JEE Main 2027? Aim for at least 20 to 25 full-length mock tests before Session 1 (January 2027). At 3 to 4 per week from October to December 2026, this target is achievable. Use the JEE Main Full Test Series for topic-wise and full-length practice.
Q50. Is coaching necessary for cracking JEE Main 2027? No. Many candidates clear JEE Main through self-study with NCERTs, standard reference books, and consistent PYQ practice. However, structured coaching provides a ready-made timetable, doubt resolution, and peer competition, which can accelerate preparation significantly. The deciding factor is discipline and consistent practice, not the coaching institute.
Q51. How important are PYQs for JEE Main 2027 preparation? Extremely important. Analysis shows 20 to 30 percent of JEE Main questions in any session are conceptually identical to questions from previous years. Candidates who solve 8 years of PYQs (2019 to 2026) with detailed analysis consistently outperform those who rely purely on textbooks. Access chapter-wise PYQs at JEE Main PYQ.
Q52. What happens after qualifying JEE Main 2027? Qualified candidates (those above the NTA qualifying cutoff) are eligible to: (a) Register for JEE Advanced 2027 (if in top 2,50,000), and (b) Participate in JoSAA 2027 counselling for admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
Q53. What is JoSAA? The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) conducts the joint counselling process for seat allocation to IITs (through JEE Advanced scores), NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs (through JEE Main scores). Registration for JoSAA 2027 is expected to open in June 2027 at josaa.nic.in.
Q54. Is the 75 percent Class 12 criterion mandatory for NIT admission? Yes. Candidates must have scored at least 75 percent aggregate in Class 12 (65 percent for SC/ST) or be in the top 20th percentile of their respective board to receive a seat through JoSAA at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. This criterion does not affect eligibility to appear in JEE Main.
Q55. Can I get NIT admission with 93 percentile in JEE Main? Qualifying the NTA cutoff (approximately 93 to 95 percentile for General in 2026) makes you eligible for JoSAA counselling. However, actual NIT admission depends on your AIR and the closing rank for the branch and institute you choose. At 93 percentile, seats at newer NITs in less popular branches (Civil, Mining, Metallurgy) are realistic through JoSAA. CSE at top NITs requires 99.5 to 99.9 percentile. For closing rank data, visit JEE Main Cutoff.
Q56. Can an NRI candidate appear in JEE Main 2027? Yes. NRI candidates are eligible for JEE Main. They must choose from international examination centres if appearing from abroad, or can appear from India by selecting Indian centres. Different fee amounts apply. NRI candidates' scores are valid for JoSAA counselling under the DASA or regular quota depending on the institution.
Q57. Can I appear in both Paper 1 (B.Tech) and Paper 2A (B.Arch) in the same session? Yes. A candidate can apply for Paper 1, Paper 2A, Paper 2B, or any combination, by paying the applicable combined fee.
Q58. I scored below the qualifying cutoff in JEE Main 2026. Am I eligible for JEE Main 2027? Eligibility depends on your Class 12 pass year, not your previous JEE Main score. If you passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026 or are appearing in 2027, you are eligible regardless of past JEE Main performance.
Q59. Does JEE Main score expire? Can I use my 2025 score for 2027 admissions? No. The JEE Main score is valid only for the year in which it is obtained. A JEE Main 2025 score cannot be used for JoSAA 2027 counselling. You must appear in JEE Main 2027 and qualify with a new score for 2027 admissions.
Q60. What is DASA and who is it for? DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) is a separate admission process run by individual NITs and IIITs for NRI, PIO, and OCI candidates. It uses JEE Main scores but has a separate counselling and fee structure. NRI candidates should visit the DASA official website for details specific to each institution.
