Understanding CUET UG eligibility before registering is not optional. Candidates who register without meeting a university's specific eligibility conditions may qualify CUET but still be denied admission during document verification at the counselling stage. CUET UG eligibility has two distinct layers that candidates must both understand: NTA's eligibility to appear in the examination and the university-specific eligibility to receive admission through CUET scores.
For appearing in CUET UG 2026, NTA has set extremely broad eligibility conditions. For appearing in CUET (UG) 2026, there is no age limit for the candidates. The candidates who have passed the Class 12 or equivalent examination or are appearing in 2026 can appear in the CUET (UG) 2026 examination. This means virtually any Class 12 student or graduate can appear, regardless of age, board, stream, or previous Class 12 percentage.
However, each participating university independently sets its own admission eligibility conditions, including minimum Class 12 percentage requirements. These university-specific conditions are separate from NTA's appearing conditions and must be verified for each target institution.
This page covers the complete CUET UG 2026 eligibility landscape: NTA's examination eligibility, university-specific admission eligibility, age limit clarifications, the landmark subject freedom change in 2026, category-wise minimum marks, NRI and foreign national conditions, final year student eligibility, and common eligibility misconceptions.
Official Source: CUET UG 2026 eligibility is confirmed in the official Information Bulletin at cuet.nta.nic.in (released January 3, 2026). Verify university-specific eligibility from each participating university's admission prospectus.
Visit the CUET UG complete guide for the full exam overview, dates, syllabus, cutoff, and all resources.
| Eligibility Parameter NTA Condition (to appear) Typical University Condition (for admission) | ||
| Educational Qualification | Class 12 pass or appearing in 2026 | Class 12 pass with minimum marks |
| Minimum Marks to Appear | No minimum; any Class 12 student eligible | 45% General, 40% SC/ST/OBC (varies by university) |
| Age Limit | No age limit | No standard limit; some universities have specific criteria |
| Subject Restriction | No restriction from 2026 (subject freedom) | Programme-specific subject requirements exist |
| Nationality | Indian nationals and eligible NRIs/OCIs/PIOs | Varies by university and seat category |
| Attempt Limit | No limit | Not applicable (one attempt per year) |
| Board Recognition | Any recognised Central or State Board | Recognised board required |
Candidates must have passed Class 12 (10+2) or an equivalent qualifying examination from a recognised Central or State Board. Students currently appearing in Class 12 in 2026 are also eligible to appear for CUET UG 2026.
Accepted qualifying examinations include:
There is no restriction on stream. Science, Commerce, Humanities, and Vocational stream students are all equally eligible. As a major 2026 change, students can now choose any subject for CUET UG, regardless of their Class 12 subjects. This means a Science stream student can choose History and Economics as domain subjects if their target programme requires it.
Unlike JEE Main (which restricts eligibility to candidates who passed Class 12 in the past 2 years), CUET UG has no year-of-passing restriction for appearing in the examination.
| Year of Passing Class 12 CUET UG 2026 Appearing Eligibility | |
| 2026 (appearing) | Eligible |
| 2025 | Eligible |
| 2024 | Eligible |
| 2023 | Eligible |
| Any earlier year | Eligible |
However, some universities have their own restrictions on when Class 12 was passed for specific programmes. Always verify from the target university's admission notification.
There is no age limit for CUET UG 2026 prescribed by NTA. The official NTA notification states that for appearing in CUET (UG) 2026, there is no age limit for the candidates.
However, the applicants will be required to fulfil the age criteria (if any) of the University or Institution in which they are desirous of taking admission. Some universities may have course-specific age requirements. For example, certain professional undergraduate programmes may have age conditions specified in their admission brochures.
There is no upper age limit, but candidates must meet course-specific and university-specific eligibility criteria. Candidates should always verify age requirements with their target university directly rather than assuming no age restriction applies to admission as well.
NTA prescribes no minimum marks requirement to appear in CUET UG. Any Class 12 student or graduate, regardless of their board percentage, can register for and appear in CUET UG 2026.
This is fundamentally different from NEET (which requires 50% in PCB for General category to appear) and makes CUET accessible to all Class 12 students regardless of their board performance.
The minimum marks requirement applies not to appearing in CUET but to actual admission eligibility at participating universities. Each university independently sets its minimum Class 12 marks threshold.
| Category Typical Minimum Class 12 Marks for Admission | |
| General / UR | 45% to 50% (varies by university and programme) |
| NC-OBC / EWS | 42% to 45% |
| SC | 40% |
| ST | 40% |
| PwD (General) | 40% to 45% |
Important clarification: These percentages are for admission eligibility, not for appearing in CUET. A candidate with 38% in Class 12 can appear for CUET UG but may not qualify for admission at universities with 40% SC minimum marks if they are an SC candidate, or at universities with 45% General minimum if they are a General category candidate.
| University General Category Minimum OBC-NCL SC/ST | |||
| Delhi University (DU) | 45% in qualifying exam | 40% | 40% |
| Banaras Hindu University (BHU) | 45-50% (programme-specific) | 40% | 40% |
| Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) | 45% | 40% | 40% |
| Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) | 45% | 40% | 40% |
| Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) | 45-50% | 40% | 40% |
Always verify from the specific university's admission notification as these figures are subject to change each year.
One of the most significant eligibility-related changes in CUET UG 2026 is the removal of subject stream restrictions. Students can now choose any subject for CUET UG, regardless of their Class 12 subjects.
Before 2026, CUET UG had restrictions where candidates could primarily select domain subjects aligned with their Class 12 stream. A Science stream student had limited ability to select Humanities subjects.
From 2026 onwards, this restriction is removed. A student who studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in Class 12 can now choose History, Political Science, and Economics as their CUET domain subjects if their target programme requires it.
For programme-specific admissions: Even with subject freedom, universities still require specific CUET subject combinations for specific programmes. A B.Com (Hons.) at DU still requires Accountancy and/or Business Studies or Economics. The subject freedom does not override programme-specific requirements; it removes the board-stream restriction on which CUET subjects you are allowed to select.
For interdisciplinary aspirants: Students with genuine interest in switching from Science to Humanities or Commerce backgrounds can now select CUET subjects aligned with their target programme without being constrained by their Class 12 stream.
Note on preparation: Subject freedom means a candidate can technically select any subject regardless of Class 12 background. However, domain subjects are entirely NCERT Class 12-based. A student who did not study History in Class 12 and selects CUET History must independently prepare all 15 History themes from Class 12 NCERT from scratch.
No additional conditions beyond the basic qualification. Minimum marks for admission at most central universities: 45%.
OBC-NCL candidates must hold a valid Non-Creamy Layer certificate from the competent authority. The certificate must be current (typically issued within the financial year of admission). Minimum marks for admission: typically 40 to 42% at central universities.
EWS candidates must hold a current EWS certificate confirming annual family income below Rs. 8 lakh. The certificate must be issued for the current financial year. Minimum marks: 45% (same as General for most universities).
SC certificate must be from the competent state government authority. Minimum marks for admission: 40% at most central universities.
ST certificate must be from the competent authority. Minimum marks for admission: 40% at most central universities.
PwD candidates with benchmark disability (40% or more) must hold a valid UDID card or disability certificate from a government medical authority. NTA issued a specific advisory regarding UDID Card and Disability Certificate update before filling the CUET UG 2026 application form. PwD candidates receive additional time during the examination (check the specific allocation in the 2026 information bulletin).
CUET UG is open to Indian nationals and eligible international candidates.
| Category CUET UG Appearing Eligibility Admission Eligibility | ||
| Indian National | Yes | All seat categories |
| NRI (Non-Resident Indian) | Yes | NRI quota at participating universities (if available) or open category |
| OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) | Yes | As per university's OCI/NRI admission policy |
| PIO (Person of Indian Origin) | Yes | As per university's PIO admission policy |
| Foreign National | Yes (subject to NTA conditions) | Foreign national quota at participating universities |
NRI, OCI, and foreign national candidates may appear at international centres. CUET UG 2026 is conducted at 26 cities outside India, allowing international candidates to appear without travelling to India.
For DU admission, NRI quota seats (typically 5% of total seats in each programme) are allocated through CUET UG scores in the NRI category.
Students appearing in Class 12 in 2026 are eligible to register for and appear in CUET UG 2026. No proof of passing is required at the time of registration. However:
This distinction is the most commonly misunderstood aspect of CUET UG eligibility. The table below clarifies both layers for popular DU programmes.
| DU Programme CUET Appearing Eligibility DU Admission Eligibility (Additional) | ||
| B.Com (Hons.) | Class 12 in any stream | Min. 45% in Class 12 (General); CUET subjects: Mathematics/Applied Mathematics and any one of: Accountancy, Economics, Business Studies |
| B.A. (Hons.) Psychology | Class 12 in any stream | Min. 45% in Class 12 (General); relevant CUET domain subject |
| B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics | Class 12 in any stream | Min. 45% in Class 12; Physics and Mathematics as CUET domain subjects |
| B.A. (Hons.) English | Class 12 in any stream | Min. 45% in Class 12; English Language and English domain |
| B.A. (Hons.) Economics | Class 12 in any stream | Min. 45% in Class 12; Economics as required domain subject |
Even under the 2026 subject freedom policy, DU and other universities retain programme-specific CUET subject combination requirements. Selecting incorrect CUET subjects makes a candidate ineligible for specific programmes at specific universities even if they scored 250/250.
Fact: NTA's "no minimum marks" condition applies only to appearing in CUET UG. Delhi University requires a minimum of 45% in Class 12 for General category candidates to receive admission through CUET. A candidate with 38% who scores 240/250 in CUET will not be admitted to DU's General category programmes.
Fact: Subject freedom removes the Class 12 stream restriction on which CUET subjects you can select. It does not override programme-specific CUET subject requirements set by universities. Each programme at each university specifies which CUET domain subjects must be included in your combination.
Fact: NTA's "no age limit" applies to appearing in CUET. Individual universities may have programme-specific age criteria. Verify from each target university's admission notification.
Fact: CUET score is the primary criterion but not the only one. Universities also check: minimum Class 12 percentage, specific subject combinations in CUET, category certificate validity, document verification, and programme-specific conditions. Clearing the CUET cutoff does not guarantee admission if any of these additional conditions are not met.
Fact: With the 2026 subject freedom policy, you can technically select Accountancy even without studying it in Class 12. However, the CUET Accountancy paper tests Class 12 NCERT Accountancy content in full. A candidate unfamiliar with this content will score significantly lower than those who studied it in Class 12.
CUET does not have a centralised AIQ system like NEET. Each university allocates all its seats through its own merit list using CUET scores. There is no distinction between AIQ and state quota in CUET-based admissions (unlike NEET where 15% AIQ and 85% state quota exist for government medical colleges).
Delhi University, like all central universities, follows the statutory reservation policy:
Category benefits apply only if candidates hold valid current certificates at the time of DU document verification.
Q1. Is there an age limit for CUET UG 2026? No. NTA has not prescribed any age limit for appearing in CUET UG 2026. However, some universities may have course-specific age conditions which candidates must verify independently.
Q2. What is the minimum Class 12 percentage required to appear in CUET UG? NTA prescribes no minimum percentage to appear in CUET UG. Any Class 12 student can register and appear regardless of their board marks. Minimum marks conditions apply only for actual admission at participating universities (typically 45% for General category).
Q3. Can a student who failed Class 12 and is repeating it appear for CUET 2026? Yes, as long as they are appearing in Class 12 in 2026 (as a repeating candidate). They are eligible to appear in CUET UG 2026.
Q4. Can a PCM student choose History and Political Science as CUET domain subjects in 2026? Yes. From CUET UG 2026, students can choose any subject regardless of their Class 12 stream. A PCM student can select History and Political Science if their target programme requires these subjects.
Q5. Is CUET UG compulsory for admission to Delhi University? Yes. Admission to University of Delhi (DU) and most central universities is strictly based on CUET UG scores. Board percentage alone is no longer used for DU admission.
Q6. Can NRI candidates appear for CUET UG? Yes. NRI candidates are eligible. CUET UG 2026 has 26 international exam cities for candidates appearing from abroad.
Q7. I passed Class 12 in 2023. Am I eligible for CUET UG 2026? Yes. CUET UG has no year-of-passing restriction. A candidate who passed in 2023 is fully eligible for CUET UG 2026. However, verify from each target university's admission notification as some programmes may have year-of-passing conditions.
